Loadhog – No Wrap No Pump Trucks No Pallets

Loadhog – Innovation made in UK.

loadhog

Good afternoon and thank you to the Post Expo team for inviting me to join you here today.

My name is Ed Fanshawe & I am one of the founding managers at a company called Loadhog, based in Sheffield UK.

We established Loadhog 5 years ago now to make innovative, patented transit packaging products for a number of different industries – basically to solve every day problems like waste, security and reducing transport costs.

Now, I have never managed to impress many ladies by admitting to working in “transit packaging” so I guess it is not seen as the most exciting topic in the world

However, I wanted to take this opportunity to provoke a little thought and hopefully debate if nothing else. I wanted to show you

First) Why the choice of transit packaging can be just as important as that of technology, automation or new vehicles

Second) Why it can reap huge rewards in it’s own right without any of the investment involved in these areas and

Third) How important industry wide collaboration can be to implementing it in practice

1) What is “Transit Packaging”?

o Transit Packaging is the part of the Supply Chain that is used to hold, secure and move product between operations & between physical locations

o Specifically here, I am talking about the movement of trayed mail

The question is; How do we optimise the handling and movement of mail trays full and empty?

2) Why is it important? – afterall, it’s such a small part of the overall process?!

There has been a tremendous focus within the postal sector in recent years on investment in new automation, innovative technology and greener/more efficient vehicles – all of which can have a massive impact on the success of a business.

By contrast, the choice of how to actually handle the mail product inbetween automation, vehicles and locations has been left relatively unchanged.

Such business changing investments are all about making the flows of mail as fast, accurate and efficient as possible so why not apply this principle to how the mail is actually transported up to and after the automation?

Not only should a transit packaging system be complementary to technology & automation but it should actually facilitate it

If the right transit packaging is found:

o it will drive significant benefits in it’s own right – with or without the investment in automation or new, greener transport vehicles – I’ll come on to some of these later on

and what’s more

o it can be implemented with very little disruption to your every day operations

3) Why then is it often left to the last minute once everything else has been commissioned – leaving no alternative but to stick with current systems based on metal roll cages/stillages & magnums?

Well, there are 3 key reasons:

a) It’s not a “clear cut” choice – usually covering a miriad of options available – all with positives and negatives for different supply chains

b) Perception: It is seen as an expensive “necessary evil” not an opportunity to generate value

and

c) It requires change – to methods of working and to processes

It seems to be definitely something to leave as late as possible in the process
… preferably best left to someone else or even better
… just stick with existing equipment and design everything else around that!

Imagine for a minute if you would, a world where the handling & transportation of trayed mail had no precedent – so non of the metal stillages, roll cages or magnums currently used exist.

What parameters would be considered in the design of the ideal transit packaging?

1) Automatable… obviously!

2) Yet easy to use in the more manual areas (at Delivery Office for example)

3) Waste free, secure, not reliant on any other dedicated equipment (forklifts, banding/wrap machines etc)

4) Occupies absolute minimum of space in Mail Centres

5) Allows the maximum amount of mail to be moved per vehicle (minimising the number of vehicles needed, the fuel used and all the other bits such as on-site traffic, planning and unloading times).

Put simply,

o “the minimum efficient equipment to ensure maximum mail security

usability &

operational effectiveness”

THE PALLY

One alternative developed to better address these specific principles is the Pally & Lid system:

o A half euro (800x600mm) plastic pallet usable with all MHE, racking and high speed automation lines. It gives you the exact same usable footprint as a roll cage, without all the metal

o Once the trays are stacked on top, the Lid can be secured

o One pedal Press will release the pallet bearers and the load becomes a fully mobile wheeled unit

o One more pedal press will transfer up to 500kg of load from the wheels to the pallet bearers for total stability in picking, in transit and on tail lifts

But why is this any better than current equipment in use – afterall, it does the job?

1) First & foremost – you can get 42% more Pally’s per 40ft trailer than you can with standard roll cages – 64 Pallys vs only 45 roll cages

o That’s up to 42% of all your vehicles can be taken off the road immediately

2) For empty mail trays, this vehicle utilisation increases to over 50% more than cages with 1/3 less weight per vehicle!

3) In Mail Centre or Client operations, 10 empty Pally & Lids can be moved by one person (halving the trips currently needed to collect cages for end of line stacking or vehicle unloading)

4) You will need up to 80% LESS space to store empty Pally & Lids

AND

5) they can be completely automated

At client operations:

1) No longer are the clients reliant on dedicated forklifts & drivers to move stillages/magnums

2) They share the same reduced transport and traffic benefits as the Mail Operator

3) Product security is enhanced with a lockable lid and RFID traceability inbuit

4) They have a system that is min. 58% lighter to move and more mobile around often narrow printing lines

Yorkshire men are reknowned for being especially “careful” with their money – saving every penny wherever possible. Well, I am afraid my Chairman is about as Yorkshire as it gets… but even he was impressed with the savings proven by our client’s and I hope that says quite a lot – even without having used the Pally system!

So why is every one not using Pally & Lids – or something similar already?

Well, aside from the points already made about the “ease” of sticking with what is used:

1) It’s not for everyone – cages or a “sided container” will always have use for packets/parcels and or sacks

2) Some companies have preferences for other solutions

3) More importantly however, the ultimate success of a new system such as Pally will require collaboration up and down the mail supply chain from Clients such as the major Banks to the Down Stream Access Operators such as UK Mail and TNT Post to the encumbent national postal carrier such as Royal Mail.

Whilst proven in one or two areas of this supply chain, an end-to-end solution would multiply the benefits of the Pally system – allowing every part of every operation from origin to delivery to realise the full potential

However, this requires a very broad, if you like self-less VISION by the supply chain members – close relationships, openness and a willingness not just to accept but to really drive innovation in a joined up industry wide action – that is the hard bit!

As ever, change is slow to come but it is coming and I hope I have given you all food for thought. In summary: The choice of transit packaging will

o enhance benefits from the current investment in technology, automation & vehicles

o drive major competitive advantage in it’s own right and

o can actually be implemented as part of your every day operations instead of existing established transport media

o however, it often requires openness to change and frequently relies on the strength of industry wide collaboration if it will succeed.

I would welcome any questions, comment or ideas you may have any time and I will be on stand 2034 in the show, should you have the time later on to stop by… I think we even have a few cold beers unless the guys have already found the key to the fridge!
